One significant change is the extension of post-study work rights for international higher education graduates. Graduates with specific degrees will receive an additional two years on their Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), provided they have eligible qualifications.

Additionally, the maximum number of hours per fortnight that international students can work will increase from 40 to 48 hours.

In an announcement made last year, the Australian government revealed plans to extend post-study work rights to certain overseas graduates holding specific degrees. However, the list of these degrees was not initially disclosed.

Recently, in February 2023, the government released a list of programs eligible for the two-year extension. This list includes occupations identified in the 2022 Skills Priority List, along with a summary of acceptable qualifications for each category.

Notably, all doctoral studies, regardless of the field, are considered qualified for the measure and are not individually listed.

• The select bachelor program will be extended from two years to four years.
• The select master’s degree will be extended from three years to five years.
• For doctoral qualifications, the duration will be extended from four years to 6 years.

As previously mentioned, the extension will be implemented to a list of in-demand occupations. For these programs, related qualifications are also developed by the Department of Education with the collaboration of Jobs and Skills, Australia.

Studying abroad often requires financial stability to manage various expenses. International students, including those in Australia, often rely on part-time jobs to support themselves.

In a recent development, the Australian government has decided to increase the maximum work hours allowed for international students. Starting from 1st July 2023, students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, an increase from the previous limit of 40 hours.

This change applies to both current and new international students, providing them with more flexibility to manage their expenses and gain valuable work experience. These adjustments make Australia an even more attractive destination for studying abroad, offering enhanced career prospects and financial support opportunities for students across various fields of study.

Your student visa may be cancelled if you are no longer enrolled in a registered course. Your enrolment is considered to end when you complete the course, even if this is before the end date on your Confirmation of Enrolment.

After completing your course, you typically have 3 months to depart Australia or apply for another visa, depending on your enrolment arrangement.

There are several situations where we may cancel your visa:

1. If you complete the course for which your student visa was granted and do not leave Australia or apply for a new visa within 3 months.
2. If you have changed courses since your visa was granted, and your new Confirmation of Enrolment for your principal course has an earlier end date, and you do not leave Australia or apply for a new visa within 28 days of completing the course.
3. If you are studying more than one course on your visa (course packaging) and finish a course early, resulting in a gap between courses of more than 2 months (except if this gap occurs between the end of an academic year and the beginning of a new academic year).

Before cancelling your visa, we will consider various factors, including if you legitimately finished the course early, have a good academic record, and if it is reasonable to expect you to enrol in another course during the course gap.

Your visa may also be cancelled if you are non-compliant with any other student visa conditions.
